11-miles – Garton on the Wolds to Huggate
Starting from your doorstep, we will head off to pick up the first stage of the Wold Rangers Way, walking through Tibthorpe Wold and Deepdale enjoying some big open skies as we enjoy the fabulous views in Huggate Heads near the historic village of Huggate to mark the end of day one.
An optional detour could be the Field House Coffee Barn to enjoy some tea and cake and use their facilities (note this does add an extra two miles to our walk) or once we have been picked up we can call there on the way back to Church Farm cottages.
For dinner you can either self-cater and put your feet up at Church Farm Cottages, or we can direct you to one of the many fantastic pubs in the area or you could even bring in a takeaway from Wetwang's famous Deep Blue Fish and Chip Shop.
11- miles – Huggate to Thixendale
Today starts along Hawold Bridle Road passing ancient earthworks and tumuli as we enter Nettle Dale. From here we will enjoy lofty views across Pasture Dale, before navigating back towards Huggate and one of our favourite places in the Wolds – the Secret Poetry Bench in Horse Dale. After walking though Fridaythorpe, the highest village in the Wolds, we will enjoy some more rolling hills and dales before encountering ‘Waves and Time’ an artwork nestling in the heart of Thixen Dale. Our final stretch on day two is a wander to Thixendale village. We have two options that could be added to today’s adventures – either a refreshment stop in Fridaythorpe for tea and cake at Seaways Café or a finish at renowned artist, Robert Fuller’s Gallery just outside Thixendale for coffee and to view his wonderful paintings - or both!
Non-walking day
Time for a break in our walking adventures when you can take advantage of the rest and put your boots up or explore some more of what the Yorkshire Wolds has to offer – from the nearby historic Sledmere House to the Sykes Church Trail or the dog-friendly beaches on the east coast – we will recommend a range of ideas to suit your interests. Then, in the evening over a light supper you can enjoy a talk by a local historians to find out more about everywhere you are visiting. Vegan / Vegetarian/ Gluten Free options available.
10- miles – Thixendale to the Sir Tatton Sykes Monument, Sledmere
Back on the trail, our next day of walking picks up in Thixendale to gain some height in Water Dale and through Court Dale before reaching an elevated stretch near to the deserted medieval village of Wharram Percy. (The village itself could easily be visited on the previous day when not walking). Again, we travel through an ancient landscape of pre-historic burial sites and along a disused railway track into the pretty village of Fimber, before heading along some green lanes to the magnificent monument erected to celebrate the life of Sir Tatton Sykes. We also have the option of visiting the fabulous Farthings Vineyard in Fimber for a home-baked lunch if this is desirable.
12- miles – Sir Tatton Sykes Monument to Garton on the Wolds
Our final walking day brings us back to Garton on the Wolds but not before we have discovered plenty more history including another deserted medieval village at Cottam as well as an abandoned WWII airfield and Danes Graves tumuli – all with a wealth of stories to tell. Our route then takes us into the market town of Driffield and the site of Moot Hill motte and bailey castle, which dates to the Roman period. After a refreshment or ice-cream break we then, for our final leg, walk via the small historic hamlet of Elmswell, before a green lane takes us all the way back to Garton on the Wolds. Later that evening we will celebrate our achievements at The Gait Inn in Millington located in the heart of the Wolds, with medals and certificates for all and perhaps a glass or two of something chilled!
Leisurely departure on Saturday morning or book an extra night to enjoy even more of what the Wolds has to offer
