We would love everyone to enjoy the beautiful Yorkshire Wolds and benefit from the wide open spaces, the beauty of the landscapes and the tranquilly that the hills and dales offer us. As such, our route descriptions are as detailed as possible, and contain a large number of photographs to help you make an informed decision about which route to choose. We have selected routes that we feel are perhaps more suitable for people with additional needs and are very happy to advise individuals about suggested walking routes and itineraries (just contact us by clicking the 'Contact us' button). You can also view 1 minute videos of some of our more popular walks on our 'Choose a Walk Page' (scroll to the bottom of the page).
All of our route descriptions contain details about obstacles, terrain or other things you may encounter and find difficult when walking in the Wolds. We describe (and photograph) the types of gates you might come across - kissing gates, swing gates, large gates, narrow gates, as well as stiles that either you or your dog might struggle with.
We also detail if we encounter particularly slippery or muddy conditions underfoot (although this might change throughout the year) and also where parts of our paths could be under water (again, this changes throughout the year).
We know that some people do not like livestock and prefer not to walk where they might encounter them. We therefore always mention when we come across cows or sheep, and in some cases, where it is possible, suggest alternate routes to avoid them. If in doubt please email us and we will advise where possible.
If you would like more support and company on your adventures, you could join our Bill & Mrs M Club to take part in our organised guided walk events. We can advise you on which event might be more suitable for your needs and ensure that there are others to keep you company while we walk. Our guided walks are always taken at a steady pace to match that of our slowest participant, and we will always make sure that any obstacles we come across are dealt with confidently by everyone who comes along with us.
You can try one of our events, without joining our club, if we open it up to the general public - just keep an eye on our Facebook page and our special events page on this web site. If you enjoy the event then you can join up!
If you have a carer or someone that assists you, then they can walk for free on any of our public events and come as your guest if you become a member. What's more we are a friendly bunch and our club is a great way to make new friends.
Just a few suggestions to make your walking day that bit better!
This need not be large, but always take some water for you and your dog, a collapsible dog dish and a few snacks (maybe even homemade ones!) for both of you depending on the length of your walk. Plus always be prepared with a waterproof coat, a small first aid kit for blisters and bug bites (just in case), your dog lead and some doggy bags (just in case!).
I use mainly OS maps 294 and 300 for my walks. These now come with a free download for your mobile that tracks your progress and you can always see where you are - a huge asset if you tend to occasionally go wrong (like me). I have linked the routes that I have created using the OS maps app on each of our walks and the app download prompt should appear if you click the link provided. This will allow you to use the GPS tracker.
You can also print off the routes I have put together as they are all available as downloadable pdfs. All of our route pdfs are 2 -3 A4 sides only.
All of our walks are round walks, starting and finishing at the same place. If you are driving try and use car parks where you can so that you don't block traffic access to the villages or farmland.
I always give myself a good dousing (including my clothes) of insect repellent before setting off, as there is nothing worse than getting bitten to death whilst you are walking. I have found Mrs White's Unstung Hero Mosquito repellent pretty good as a people, pet and planet friendly spray that says that it is - a revolutionary formula which combines a fragrant, fresh Eau de Cologne and an ingredient that renders you 'invisible' to mosquitoes, ticks, black fly, wasps and bees. See our blog of the 11th September 2023 where I forgot to douse!
Respect everyone
• be considerate to those living in, working in and enjoying the countryside
• leave gates and property as you find them
• do not block access to gateways or driveways when parking
• be nice, say hello, share the space
• follow local signs and keep to marked paths unless wider access is available
Protect the environment
• take your litter home – leave no trace of your visit
• do not light fires and only have BBQs where signs say you can
• always keep dogs under control and in sight
• dog poo – bag it and bin it in any public waste bin or take it home
• care for nature – do not cause damage or disturbance
Enjoy the outdoors
• check your route and local conditions
• plan your adventure – know what to expect and what you can do
• enjoy your visit, have fun, make a memory
