Over Burdale

1. You can start this walk a bit closer if you want to  as there is parking for a couple of cars where you turn off onto the Centenary Way footpath from the road, but if you want the security of a car park use the one for Wharram Percy Deserted Medieval Village. Car Parking is £2

2. If parking at the car park, turn right onto the quiet road and walk along for just over 1/2 a mile to where the road bends right then immediately left (this is also where you can park). Turn sharp right onto the footpath here and follow it along past the woodland on your right. In these woods is the disused Burdale Tunnel (not accessible).

Burdale Tunnel was a 1,747-yard railway tunnel that was built for the Malton and Driffield Junction Railway (nicknamed the "Malton Dodger"), which completely closed down in 1958. Building work on the tunnel began in 1847 as part of a grand, ambitious plan for a mainline route connecting Newcastle to Hull, but during its use it was affected by unstable shale, heavy waterlogging, and financial ruin, forcing work to halt and scale down before finishing construction in 1853. The southern portal  was built large enough to support a double track, though it only ever housed a single track line. After the railway line shut in 1958, locals walked and biked through the tunnel until both portals were bricked up in July 1961.

10. Walk along the path on the field edge enjoying views over to your right until you reach where the road swings right at a white stone path and a small stubby finger post.

11. You will go slightly downhill on the white stone path but just as you reach the trees and a steeper downhill part you will see a broken finger post leaning in the hedge on your right directing you to turn left along the wood (which will now be on your right).

12. Follow the path along the edge of the wood, where it emerges at another finger post directing you to turn left onto another farm track.

13. Here, as you walk along this farm track (with the hedge on your left) you will start to see some spectacular views of Burdale and eventually the quarry - a large hollowed out section in the hillside.

14. Just keep following this path all the way along for about half a mile enjoying the views until you reach the end at an open kissing gate where you turn left.

15. Follow the path along the field to your right as it goes slightly uphill and into a second field. Eventually you will reach your original footpath at a 3-way fingerpost, with the Centenary Way signed left and right in front of you (you will have come up the bridleway).

16. Turn right here and follow the footpath back to the road.

17. At the road turn left, either collect your car or walk back to the car park.
